Powers: Advanced

This article is continued from the articles Powers: Basics and Powers: Intermediate.

Now that you understand How Powers are Used and Bloodline Strengths, the following section revolves more specifically around advanced essentials.

Quick Review
Remember, you only need a total sum of 501 powers (if you have 501 clan). That's to say, if your clan is larger than that number you still only 501 powers to be equipped.

Also remember that the goal is to have the strongest powers in each discipline:

Physical

Mental

Supernatural

Understanding the Fight Dialog (aka Fight Results)
As mentioned before, when you attack another vampire a fight dialog is shown. This dialog contains all of your result information from combat.

When you fight another player, this dialog shows exactly what you are attacking with. As you look at your results from the fight, you'll see the fight dialog is in paragraph form.

Next to your name, you'll see your strongest powers within each of the 3 disciplines. While the dialog is all in one unseparated paragraph, it will still always start with Physical powers, then Mental and finally Supernatural.

Your task is to learn where the disciplines start and stop in the paragraph. A quick comparison of your results against your powers (or if you know them all by heart already) will help you determine where the separations occur for you.

Once you become familiarized with it, this single skill will generously aid you in making sure you have optimal powers.

To get you going, let's take a look at a sample in the next section!

Fight Dialogs: Calculators Welcome
Here's an example of what you could see if you're in the Elder Tier:

Your clan of 501 attacked with:
1 Defang, 1 Blood Shot, 8 Aerial Decapitate, 1 Bind Prey, 1 Mist Form, 1 Caustic Touch, 1 Psychotic Rush, 1 Demonic NutCracker, 1 Flight, 1 Essence of Caine, 1 Harness Rage, 1 Aerial Attack, 2 Vampiric Scream, 88 Talon of the beast, 392 Decapitate, 1 Omnipresence, 3 Animus of Tepes, 1 Psychic Spine Snap, 1 Vitriolic Cravings, 1 Arcane Knowledge, 2 Astral Perception, 1 Dark Embrace, 2 Compel Atrophy, 1 Serpent Storm, 1 Crypto Maniac, 9 Blessing of Lillith, 14 Instill Fear, 3 Forced Somnambulation , 461 Reflect Unlife, 1 Command Death Moon, 1 Union of Three, 1 Invoke Superstition, 3 Sire Intervention, 2 Summon Nightmare Queen, 1 Conjure Dark Minions, 1 Summon Kubikajiri, 1 Spirit of Andilaveris, 8 Scorpions Touch, 6 Pyrokenesis, 8 Rigor Mortis, 13 Rot Flesh, 21 Breath of Dragon, 10 Black Breath, 18 Control Sandstorm, 20 Burning Touch, 7 Bat Swarm, 379 Vampiric Transformation

Keep in mind that once you learn how to discern the separations it's actually very easy understand... and gets even easier as soon as you're comfortable with your knowledge of powers.

Let's try this same one again, with a breakdown of the disciplines and amount totals:

Your clan of 501 attacked with:
1 Defang, 1 Blood Shot, 8 Aerial Decapitate, 1 Bind Prey, 1 Mist Form, 1 Caustic Touch, 1 Psychotic Rush, 1 Demonic NutCracker, 1 Flight, 1 Essence of Caine, 1 Harness Rage, 1 Aerial Attack, 2 Vampiric Scream, 88 Talon of the beast, 392 Decapitate,
(total of 501 Physical powers)

1 Omnipresence, 3 Animus of Tepes, 1 Psychic Spine Snap, 1 Vitriolic Cravings, 1 Arcane Knowledge, 2 Astral Perception, 1 Dark Embrace, 2 Compel Atrophy, 1 Serpent Storm, 1 Crypto Maniac, 9 Blessing of Lillith, 14 Instill Fear, 3 Forced Somnambulation , 461 Reflect Unlife,
(total of 501 Mental powers)

1 Command Death Moon, 1 Union of Three, 1 Invoke Superstition, 3 Sire Intervention, 2 Summon Nightmare Queen, 1 Conjure Dark Minions, 1 Summon Kubikajiri, 1 Spirit of Andilaveris, 8 Scorpions Touch, 6 Pyrokenesis, 8 Rigor Mortis, 13 Rot Flesh, 21 Breath of Dragon, 10 Black Breath, 18 Control Sandstorm, 20 Burning Touch, 7 Bat Swarm, 379 Vampiric Transformation
(total of 501 Supernatural powers)

Note that some powers in this example may not be available to you yet. Some may depend on level, may have been purchased through the council offer page, or may even have been won during a live gaming event. The more powers you acquire, the longer your list will be.

Now you should begin to see how the vast amount of abilities you have as a vampire can play out to make you ridiculously strong.

But this is only for your Attack, what about Defense? If you recall an earlier lesson, you'll remember:

You will not always use the same powers that you attack with for your defense. This is because Powers in VDS have both an Attack stat and a Defense stat. Even so, the same formula exampled above will work for your defensive powers.

But what's the best way to get your Defense? Ask a trusted clan member or frenemy to attack you. Once they do they'll see what you defended with in their dialog, and they can copy it and send it to you.

Putting It All Together: Strength in Power Management
Once you've got it down getting your powers sorted to using the strongest Attack and Defense in each discipline is pretty easy.

But how does this all work when you come into gaining Rare powers? Only for the better! Though there's still a trick left to learn on it. Managing your powers as you get new ones will keep your maintenance low and your badassery high.

Anytime you unlock new Common powers, gain a Rare power (rares include Council and Event powers), check it's stats! If any of the new item's stats is higher than what you're currently using in a certain discipline, sell one of the next weakest commons in line.

Example:
You gain a Rare Physical that has a 5 Attack and a 2 Defense.
Your strongest Common Physical is a 4 Attack and 2 defense.

Since your new rare is 1 point stronger in physical attack, it's now taking the place of one of your strongest commons. Sell the 1 common to make up the difference!

The same applies to your defense, too.

If you happen upon a power that's stronger in both stats (attack and defense), it can take the place of up to two powers, depending on which powers you have at any given time. Everyone's different, so it all comes down to you in discerning your powers!
